Happy Wednesday, Penny Darlings!
It’s been a bit of a tough week here at PDHQ, but I wanted to thank everyone for all of the Instagram love and support on Friday. You’re all amazing and I absolutely adore you. Sometimes our personal lives aren’t as pretty looking but I’m so glad there’s such a great community!
Let me just start with the boring stuff so we can get to the goods! Ha! Check me out on Instagram here! I also started a Twitter account! Find that here! Follow Preston’s brand new fashion Instagram here! I also have a selling Instagram page where I sell some of my old clothes/styles so that I don’t drown in my own wardrobe. I just listed a few new things – so check that out!
I get asked all the time by friends to “make them Insta-famous” and the truth is – I can’t. I observed people on Instagram that I absolutely loved and saw which of their posts had the most likes on them! I studied trends and hashtags and figured it out by sheer will of observation and pattern repetition.
But I wanted to share with you today some of the tips and tricks and patterns I’ve picked up over the years and how you can start utilizing them to make your Instagram pop!
1.) Pick a ‘thing’.
Now this may sound super weird or silly – but you have to pick a thing. If it’s fashion, beauty, lifestyle, parenting, DIY, craft, sales, etc. – whatever it is – commit to it! No one is your exact personality duplicate – so your feed can’t be ALL of your interests. I’m also a die-hard theatre fan, a bad movie fanatic, a true crime murderino, an advocate of mental health, love dogs and travel, and love, and a million other things. But if my whole feed was mixed up, no one (except friends & fam!) would know my style – which is what I wanted to focus on! Pick a lane (mine is mostly lifestyle and fashion!) and stick in it!
2.) You need to show your face!
I know this is super weird – but I read this article over a year ago and I swear, I cannot remember where and cannot figure out what words I need to Google to find it – but I found an over-a-million-Insta-influencer that focused on home and DIY and she said, “Every three or four photos, I post one that includes me or my kids or my dog or husband. People love to connect to people.” So she would feature her DIY or home projects (like a newly recovered chair, with her dog laying next to the chair, or her lounging on her couch underneath her DIY wall art project!
Example: this was a sponsorship with Rhetoric Coffee! But I wanted to add a human element so I brought in my favorite human for my favorite beverage!
3.) Post quality content consistently
This is something that people are hard-pressed to figure out. You have to post the same type of content every day (sometimes more than once, or skipping a day once in awhile is pretty common but generally every day) and usually around the same time of day.
And you don’t have to have fancy cameras or lighting to get it! Constant low-light selfies that clearly have makeup on the lens or outfit photos in dirty full length mirrors are not high quality content!
For example: this is my super fancy, new HQ camera quality photo in really good lighting and color corrected and adjusted for saturation and exposure.
And this one: This was taken with a point and shoot camera in natural lighting. It has lower resolution, but the same principle of good lighting and editing.
And this one was taken with my iPhone 4.
You don’t need to have anything fancy to create quality content. You just need to have a good eye for lighting, poses, and angles! It’s super easy! Grab a friend with your phone one day and try it out!
4.) Aesthetic is a real thing
You’ve heard people use the phrase: “Your Insta aesthetic is lit.” and what that usually refers to is the difference of style that your photos take. Let me show you an example.
@NoelleDowning and @ColorMeCourtney use TOTALLY different filters, editing techniques, and style the same pieces in wildly different ways!
When you scroll through their feed – you can definitely tell the difference! It can help with the consistency of your page to use similar (or the same!) filters and editing techniques so your pictures look a little cleaner!
To edit your aesthetic, you need to figure out your ‘thing’, decide what editing tools and techniques you love, see which filters suit you! And you don’t need anything fancy to edit photos! I use iPiccy online to enhance colors, edit people out of the background, and more!
5.) For the love of pizza – laugh when you smile in photos
Okay. This is the EASIEST trick and no one ever believes me until they do it.
Laugh when someone says smile. Nothing needs to be funny. You don’t need to hear a joke or anything. Just make the action of laughing. I swear, you know how laughing works.
It gives you a natural smile, makes your photos look less posed and stiff and awkward.
For real, I love to go up to people who are struggling to take a selfie and ask if they want me to take a picture of them. So I usually say, “One two three, smile, one two three, another for good measure, one two three, laugh like you’re in an Olive Garden commercial and you clearly just discovered breadsticks.” and that usually gets people to chuckle.
And 9/10 that is the photo they end up choosing.
Let me show you an example:
One looks forced and posed and the other one has some “eye smiling” or “sm-eye-ling” (I just made that up. No one says that!).
For real, a simple chuckle can TOTALLY transform your look.
Just make the motion of laughing. Or let out one good ‘Ha!” when you pose!
SO HERE’S THE “END OF BLOG” SPIEL!
